Fall-Tivities

I can distinctly remember that one defining pre-baby Autumn.

Children are not things to be molded, but are people to be unfolded.
— Jess Lair

Every time I reflect back to that Autumn and how the years preceding and following that Fall pretty much mimicked that one, I cringe a little. To think that seasonal depression was really a thing and I did not have the vocabulary for it. To think that I’d bury myself so deep in work that I had time for nothing else was saddening. I never understood the concept of work life balance until now; my toddler’s second Fall. I had decided to wait all of these years to truly experience Fall by putting me… him first.

September

September was filled with two-riffic celebrations as my sweet boy completed another year here on Earth. It was filled with celebrations at school and both of his homes. He went to the Universoul circus (twice) and to the Dreamworks water park. Momma was tired by the end of the month after all of the planning that went in on her part… but it was so very worth it!

October

In October I was able to revive a tradition that I had maintained as an undergraduate in college. We went apple picking!! I forgot how fun this was and how much I needed apple cider donuts in my life. While my little one was not interested in climbing high for apples, he was very much interested in running freely through the field and snacking on any apple he could get his hands on.

November

I will preface this in stating that I REALLY wanted to go pumpkin picking, especially after having the time of our lives apple picking. A combination of weather inconveniences and my baby catching a cold lessened our chances of getting out to a real pumpkin farm. As a result, we settled for a farm in Brooklyn. The upside to this experience is that he was able to meet some new animals, feed them and pick some pumpkins as well.

Our final fall-tivity was not specific to the season but mommy had a day off and wanted to take full advantage. My baby has recently developed an obsession with fire trucks, fire fighters, putting out fires and anything related to that experience. Groupon must have known that we needed to capitalize on this fascination because they had a dynamic deal on the Nassau County Firefighter’s museum. In short, they had a “cute“ exhibit for small children. The rest of the museum essentially paid homage to firefighters, the history of fire trucks and 911 heroes. I can’t say this is a trip we would take again but he enjoyed. That’s what matters right?
